The Heat Is On: The making of saigon

The Heat is On in Saigon)

Oh baby come on!
See my bikini,
it’s just the right size.
don’t you enjoy
How it rides up my thighs?
Look from behind,
ltl knock out your eyes.
I’ll show you;My special trophy of war.
For a Marine; l’ll show more.
You won’t get up off the floor.
The heat is on in Saigon.

To me it says, it doesn’t, it loses what it had before.
Can you not actually get that with a different,
slightly different rhythm
because that’s got, that’s got the menace
that you’re talking about already there.
You have the impression…
Yes, and it’s become a turmoil,
it starts to have a bit of turmoil.

and they were all couriered out to me, and
we went backwards and forwards
for months developing it,
l think it’s the longest one we ever had.

lt was very much sort of conditioned

that’s why this sort of developed.

And then the idea of the son came in,

But it took it too near Madame Butterfly,
whereas actually Madame Butterfly
is just the jumping off ground
for what Alain and Claude- Michel had written.

Then Russ did masses of scribbles

That was the time when this,

We felt it was a good idea
and this was an attempt here.
Russ had had the brilliant idea
of putting a face into the slipstream,
it was the only place that you could hide it
and you wouldn’t see it
and then once you saw it you’d always see it.

And this became the final version.

The great, the great thing is
that l know when it’s going to be right,
but what l usually,
l never know quite what’s missing,
l know something is missing,
and the great thing between Russ and l
is that Russ will always take out
of all the garbage that l throw at him
he will find a lateral application for what l’ve said
which l would never think of
and nobody would ever think of,
only, only the famous nozzle thinks of it
and that’s what makes them brilliant.

lt really started one day
when Claude-Michel saw a picture in the newspaper,
which was a picture of a woman
which was giving her child
to a pilot an American pilot in Tan So Not Airport,
which is Saigon’s airport and giving that child,
you know both of them were crying
and she just wanted to give the child,
for the child to have a future and the immediate words
which came to our minds seeing that picture
was the ultimate sacrifice,
because that’s really l think the ultimate sacrifice
a human being can do,
not see your child again
in order to give your child a future
that you would never have yourself,
and for a long time Claude Michel
and l had been discussing the idea
of Madame Butterfly you know
that there was something there that we wanted to,
to modernize to rework
and suddenly that image made the idea of Miss Saigon.

Because of course Madame Butterfly
is not a Puccini story you imagine.
it’s a play,
it’s a play and the original of the play
it’s a French book by Pierre Lautif.

We are not trying to make musical
about the Vietnam War like the movies

it’s a tragic love story which has the Vietnam war
as a background,
or at least the very end of the Vietnam war.

now would like to add something to all that.

America had never lost a war
and this we still thought John Wayne
was going to come over the hill and save the day.
There was something dying for America,
much bigger than just the end of an event,
or a war that they had officially pulled out of two years before.
This was the end of a vision of America,
of a dream of America of its invincibility
and of the perfect morality
that we clothe ourselves in all the time.
lt came to an end brutally on that day.
So this moment in time
that’s part of the background of this love story
has a reverberation in American history
that just needs to be
you know pointed out from time to time.

That’s all. Okay, thank you.

These two pieces slide off and the bar itself,
slides down into position
which as they’re doing that,
I’ll just run through…
everything happens, glides magically.
And in the next scene, you’re in the bar,
there are a lot of American customers,
a few individual marines have individual lines,
they’re all talking about the girls,
about who they’re going to bed tonight.
We see the girls themselves
dreaming of a life in America.
One of the girls wins the Miss Saigon contest
and another of the girls, Kim,
who is going to be the central character
is bought for Chris, by his friend John,
and that all happens in this scene,
so and there it is as you see.
These pieces all slide from different directions
and meet magically together.

What l want you to imagine, just,
just for the sake of your entrance, is that,
is that there’s buildings going up here,
this, going up here and also up here,
and there’s a street here, and then there is,
there is a street at the back
that you have to walk across
and then come down.
So that what we need, is first of all it’s Lea
and then it’s Janine and she’s coming this way
and as she comes this way
she sees Isa coming down this way okay.
So you wait,
you say hello to each other
and you then both of you come down
and just, just brush past,
ignore, ignore um Lea
and so you’re coming down and you’re coming down here
when you come down to here, this hasn’t come on yet,
your walls haven’t come on yet.

Go.
Yeah that’s now…
Why does it take all day?
Because l think…
do you want to do something actually.
Yeah.
That one’s okay, that one sort of falls back….
Oh it does, doesn’t it?
Well there’s now row
but is just gets quieter which
gives the impression of a row. Okay.

You’re talking about your army and the,
the North Vietnamese army on silent feet it came,

Now the serious side of this call
apart from the great fun
you’re going to have listening to these orchestrations
is that this is the only time
where you’re not having to compete
or worry about a sound system as well,
you’re hearing this live,
So you must concentrate on listening to
the instruments that are bringing you in,
the pitch, where you’re going to get the pitch
from the tempos that are coming in
and all that sort of thing.
And for the soloists,
obviously used to working with a piano,
it’s going to be vey, very different,
that’s what we’ve got to work out today.

This is going to take an extremely long time.
We’re going to make sure
that every single technical item in the show
works and then we’re going to do it again,
and again and again,
it’s the only way to put on a show of this complexity.
lt’s going to be unbelievably tedious
and you’re going to have to all bear with it.
This rehearsal is, which will now take days
is what it’s called a technical rehearsal,
it’s not for, it’s not for you,
it’s for you and the set.
lt’s to get you and the set and the costumes
and the quick changes
and all that sort of thing working together.
This set is potentially unless we respect it,
it is potentially dangerous,
those trucks come hurtling down at a speed,
they come hurtling off at a speed,
now as long as you’re not in the way
that’s just fine,
but if you’re in the way they could mow you down.

The heat is on in Saigon
The girls are hotter than hell
One of these slits here will be Miss Saigon
God, the tension is high,
Not to mention the smell.
The heat is on in Saigon
ls there a war going on?
Don’t ask, l ain’t gonna tell

Stop there, now then, um, somebody got,
was it Greg that got knocked there?
Ruthie? Are you all right everybody?
No, she not all right.
Take deep breaths.
Have you got the ice pack coming?
Yeah the ice pack’s on it’s way get the bottle of lucade,
the ice pack’s on it way.
Deep breaths.
l do implore you if it is still moving,
than just don’t get on it.
Just stay down until it stops.
We would all rather you were late and safe
than there, you know,
we’ve got an audience in another few weeks
so just stay down,
then when it’s stopped then get up on it,
okay, then we’ll be okay.

The heat is on in Saigon
The girls are hotter than hell

lt’s still moving, or we’re moving towards it.
There was absolutely no difference
between that and the last time it was just that,
l don’t know why
we’re repeating the moving of this truck
if we can’t actually make progress
between the times that we’re doing it.
lt was absolutely no different,
there was a ferocious delay
before it started to move,
it was just terrible
and we’ve had one accident already.
Now let’s reset and this time
let’s make an attempt to actually make progress
between times thank you.

September 20th World Premiere

The first thing to say is that last night
was very much better and the only thing that,
the thing you’ve got to remember about tonight
is first of all obviously you just do exactly
what you did last night,
you don’t do too much
you don’t do too little you just,
you just concentrate on giving the best performance
and you should give the best performance
because the house is packed with our friends,
and the only people who aren’t our friends
have already written their reviews and even
if it hasn’t it doesn’t matter what they say anyway
because the show’s sold out
and nothing makes them crosser than the fact
that whatever they say
it’s not going to have any effect
on the way the show goes.

l saw people who need two days
to recover from the show,
they were so shocked and so moved by what they saw,
so every night,
evey matinee people must have the feeling
that it’s a unique performance
that you give especially for them,
so of course our future is tonight.
The whole future of this show is tonight.

Quick you must see what Claude-Michel gave us.
Lea’s got one as well.

lt’s hardly sticking out from my head at all.

He’s not normally like this?
No, l’m normally like this.

lt’s the first time l’ve not ever watched
and l don’t think l’ll ever watch a first night again
because l’ve realized that this is the solution
to not getting nervous if it goes wrong
l won’t be there to see it.

Please take your seats Iadies and gentlemen,
the curtain is about to rise. Thank you.

Back in Town)

This me-my has just been found
She hid the day we closed the bars
Show her that we don’t forget
No one is cured here without scars
You are a woman who lived without shame.
You’re an infection leR over from war.
You have dishonored the national name.
Re-education will cure the disease.
You must be shown what we do to a leach.
See how we teach an American’s whore.
lt’s time to act
My friends it’s time
Her face betrays her crime
She must pay, and her partner too
Christ, l am due at the Embassy
Where are my shoes?
l don’t want you to leave me today
Well at least Uncle Sam
bought our honeymoon cruise
if you’re going l don’t want to stay
Look l’m leaving my gun,
We got time, stay and pack
Well l will do whatever you say.
We’ll get plenty of word when the VC attack
l want you in that bed waiting when l get back
Take me with you! Take my children!
l have a letter, look! l helped the CIA!
They’ll kill who they find here!
Don’t leave us behind here!
l’ve a wife who leR already!
l have an aunt in New York!
l have gold, l can pay!
There is no one to find here!
They have leR us behind here!
l must get in there, listen, anyone!
Please tell my husband… Iook! l have his gun!
Out of my way, if that’s all that you’ve got!
lf l am here when they come, l’ll be shot!

My father was a tattoo artist in Haiphong
But his designs on mother
Didn’t last too long
My mother sold her body,
High on Betel nuts
My job was bringing red-faced monsieurs
To our huts
Selling your mom is a wrench
Perfume can cover a stench
That’s what l learned from the French
Then it all changed with Dien Bien Phu
The frog went home
Who came? Guess who?
Are you surprised we went insane
With dollars pouring down like rain?
Businessmen never rob banks
You can sell shit and get thanks
That’s what l learned from the Yanks
Oh, thank you.
l’m fed up with small-time hustles
l’m too good to waste my talent for greed
l need room to flex my muscles
ln an ocean where the big sharks feed
Make me Yankee, they’re my family
They’re selling what people need
What’s that l smell in the air
The American dream
Sweet as a new millionaire

The American dream
Pre-packed, ready-to-wear
The American dream
Fat, like a chocolate eclair
As you suck out the cream
Luck by the tail
How can you fail?
And best of all, it’s for sale
The American dream
Greasy chinks make life so sleazy
ln the States
l’ll have a club that’s four-starred

Can you do it as tightly and strongly as possible?
Can you press the head of the safety pin as well,
just make sure it doesn’t come undone.

To the Johns there l’ll sell blondes there
That they can charge on a card
Hey guys, you going my way?
You’re talking my language!
Check it out guys, check it out.
More. Give me more.
Skyscrapers
The American dream
Come to your home
The American dream
A hotel
The American dream

Congratulations my darling.
Of course the first one l read was the Telegraph.
Of course, l got killed too!
Listen, that was the best way to start.
At least they mentioned him.
They mentioned him negatively.
They did indeed, they did indeed.
But that was the only one. They were unbelievable
caused a lot of comments there.
it’s like he was intentional.
So what’s that Telegraph or Standard is that it?
No the Guardian was fabulous,
the Express was picky
but the Mail’s fantastic
and the Evening Standard was fabulous.
Well it’s worth working four years to read that.
Express
